The History of Zucchini

Like all squash varieties, zucchini have their roots in North and Central America. However, modern zucchini wasn’t developed until the second half of the 19th century in northern Italy. Because they were developed by Italian growers, they are known in many parts of the world by the name zucchini, meaning “little marrow.” (Zucchini plants are compact bush marrows grown for their immature fruits.) In other parts of the world, such as the UK, the term courgette is used; it is derived from the French word for gourd or marrow, courge. Zucchini plants are prolific and produce all summer long, making them a popular crop for home gardeners. Today, they are used in a variety of dishes all over the world and are highly popular.
