Volleyball was invented by William G. Morgan, the Director of Physical Education at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1895. It was originally called “Mintonette,” but it was later renamed. The first ball made specifically for the game was manufactured by Spalding in 1900, and the first game of beach volleyball was played in 1915 at the Outrigger Canoe Club on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. The sport became an official Olympic event in 1964 at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and remains popular today.
