The History of Trix Cereal

Trix cereal was introduced by General Mills in 1954. It was the first fruit-flavored cereal on the market and originally featured round corn puffs in three colors/flavors: Raspberry Red, Orangy Orange, and Lemony Yellow. (Additional flavors were later added.) The cereal was advertised as being a great option for breakfast or a snack. Notably, the famous Trix Rabbit debuted in 1959; the rabbit’s first appearance was in a line-drawn commercial created by Joe Harris. The famous tagline, “Silly Rabbit, Trix are for kids!” first appeared on the box earlier that year and was accompanied by an illustration of a child, however, the slogan was soon used exclusively in conjunction with the Trix Rabbit. In 1960, the Trix Rabbit appeared on the box for the first time. In 1965, Trix began making prizes available for a small price and a set number of box tops. In 1969, the shape of Trix cereal was briefly changed to a football-shaped button, but soon returned to the original round corn puff shape and stayed that way until the 1990s. Fruit-shaped Trix debuted in 1991 and came in five shapes/flavors: Red Raspberry Cluster, Yellow Lemon Wedge, Purple Grape Cluster, Green Lime Ball, and Orange Ball. The change was extremely well-received. In 2015, General Mills removed artificial colors from Trix and changed the color lineup accordingly, but the initiative was quickly reversed, and the original offerings were restored shortly after. Today, Trix remains a beloved cereal with one of the most iconic mascots in recent history.
