Tom Ford Black Orchid debuted in 2006 as the designer’s first fragrance. Reportedly, Tom Ford was searching for a rare black orchid flower. He eventually hired a horticulturist to cultivate one for him and from this quest, the idea for the eponymous fragrance was born. The designer himself was heavily involved in the process, but the scent was ultimately created by David Apel and Pierre Negrin, professional perfumers from the fragrance house Givaudan. The scent was ahead of its time and incorporated then-novel notes like incense and vanilla. Today, Tom Ford Black Orchid remains one of the design house’s most iconic fragrances.
