The History of Swim Caps

Swim caps first debuted in 1883, around the time that rubber was invented. Before rubber swim caps were available, women used cloth or silk bonnets to protect their hair in pools, lakes, and the ocean. Swim caps, while serving the practical purpose of protecting a woman’s hairstyle, quickly became a must-have fashion accessory when designers like Miuccia Prada began creating ornate versions. This trend peaked in the mid-20th century. However, simple, practical rubber swim caps also remained popular at the time and were used not only by professional swimmers, but by children learning to swim or participating in high school P.E. classes, as the caps not only helped keep harsh chlorine out of the wearer’s hair, but also helped keep hair out of pool drains. Swim caps made from modern materials are widely used by athletes and anyone wanting to protect their hair today, and while the more ornate models of yesteryear are now much less popular, they are still sometimes worn by synchronized swimmers or those wishing to emulate a vintage fashion aesthetic.
