The History of Snickerdoodles

We all know that snickerdoodles are delicious, but did you know they actually have a pretty murky origin? Most people agree that they are a variation on the sugar cookie, but there are a number of theories about where they come from and why they’re so named. The famous cookbook Joy of Cooking claims that snickerdoodles originated in Germany and that their name comes from the German word schneckennudeln, which translates to “small dumpling.” Another theory holds that the name “snickerdoodle” comes from the Dutch word snekrad, while still another theory claims that the name comes the German word schnecke, which describes a snail-like shape. Regardless of the cookie’s etymology, one thing is for sure – snickerdoodles are definitely delicious!
