Scotcheroos got their start when the recipe was printed on the side of a Rice Krispies box in the mid-1960s as a form of marketing material. At the time, combining various convenience foods together to create a brand-new culinary creation was a nationwide trend and Rice Krispies took advantage of this to entice consumers with new ways to use the cereal. Scotcheroos were notably affordable and easy to make, since the recipe only called for shelf-stable pantry staples like corn syrup, sugar, peanut butter, Rice Krispies cereal, chocolate chips, and butterscotch chips. This made them very popular in households all over the Midwest, and especially in Iowa, where the treat reached icon status. Today, scotcheroos are still served at many Midwestern gatherings and are popular with children and adults alike.
