The History of Sandwiches

The popular staple to the American diet was actually popularized by an eighteenth-century English aristocrat named John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Legend has it that Montagu had a gambling problem, and the convenient structure of a sandwich allowed him to continue playing cards while eating. His friends would hear Montagu’s request for beef between two slices of bread and started to ask for “the same order as Sandwich.” Thus, the name for this delicious treat was born.
