The History of Round Sunglasses

Round lenses have dominated the sunglasses market right from the beginning. In fact, the first mass-market sunglasses featured small, circular lenses. The early cat-eye lenses of the 1930s were also quite circular. The round style later evolved and truly caught on in the 1960s. Notably, sunglasses also became more oversized in addition to rounder in the 1960s. In fact, the decade is frequently considered the heyday of large, circular sunglasses as the trend was then at its apex. Influential figures like Diana Ross and Jackie Kennedy Onassis both famously wore oversized, round sunglasses during the decade and helped make the style a fashion must-have. Today, round sunglasses remain a fashionable choice that are regularly worn by everyday fans and A-list celebrities alike.
