The History of Polo Black

The original Polo Black cologne was developed by Pierre Negrin and debuted by Ralph Lauren Fragrances in 2005. Known for its woody base notes and fruity top notes, it soon became a hit. While it is often referred to as a cologne, the version available today is actually an eau de toilette. This gives Polo Black as stronger scent profile, as an eau de toilette typically contains an aromatic concentration between 5% and 10%, whereas a cologne typically has a concentration between 4% and 8%. The scent’s packaging was reportedly modeled after Polo’s signature flask and comes in a deep black color as a nod to the name. It also features a silver Polo Pony as a tie-in to the larger Polo line offered by Ralph Lauren. Over the years, various advertising campaigns have helped make Polo Black a cultural icon and it is now one of the most well-known men’s fragrances on the market. It is appreciated for its unique scent profile and is designed for year-round wear, although many fans say it really shines in the fall and winter. Today, Polo Black remains a beloved and iconic men’s fragrance and is available at a variety of retailers in the U.S. and abroad.
