The History of Pant Pockets

The word pocket first came from the Old Northern French word “poque”, meaning bag. Original pockets weren’t the sewn-in pockets we know and love today but were bags connected to the outside of your belt or clothing. As thieves became a problem in the 17th century, people began to cut slits in their clothing and insert their bags inside their clothing for safekeeping. This process made the pockets safer and easier to reach!
