The first Oreo cookies were produced in the Chelsea Market in Manhattan in 1912. They were introduced by Nabisco. Multiple sources note that the Oreo closely resembles the Hydrox cookie, which was made by one of Nabisco’s competitors and debuted several years before the Oreo. In 1923, Oreo ads on trolleys began to mention the famous “twist” motion. The cookies went international in 1928 and soon became popular outside of the United States. The famous Double Stuf Oreos debuted in 1974 and in 1991, Halloween Oreos featuring a pumpkin stamped onto the chocolate biscuit and orange-colored crème filling hit store shelves. Oreo Mini debuted in 1992 and in 2013, Oreo Mega Stuf debuted; the cookies were advertised as containing three times the amount of crème filling that regular Oreos are made with. Oreo Thins hit store shelves just two years later. Then, 2019 saw the release of The Most Stuf Oreos, which were advertised as having the largest amount of crème filling of any Oreo product ever created. Today, Oreos remain a highly popular snack in the U.S. as well as in many other parts of the world.
