In 1949, chemist named Emanuel Goldberg developed the first plastic pipette jars in Rochester, New York. In 1960, a group of scientists began using their lightweight plastic lab bottles as water bottles while hiking. Soon, the Nalgene brand was established and the company began offering plastic bottles designed for drinking to consumers. As the “pack in/pack out” movement gained traction in the 1970s, Nalgene water bottles increased in popularity among hikers. Travelers, athletes, and others who could benefit from lightweight, reusable water bottles also began using Nalgene bottles. In 1980, Nalgene was named the official water bottle for the U.S. Hockey Team. In 1990, colors were introduced to Nalgene water bottles for the first time, allowing consumers to express their individuality. In the 2000s, Nalgene changed the type of plastic used to create its bottles and in 2022, Nalgene began using 50% recycled plastic in its bottles. Today, Nalgene water bottles remain some of the most popular reusable plastic water bottles on the market.
