The History of Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers

Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers made their debut in 1924. Nabisco actually released two other flavors alongside the chocolate variety — Sugar and Ginger — but both were swiftly discontinued. In a 1929 ad, Nabisco suggested layering the cookies with whipped cream to create an icebox cake. Then in the 1940s, the company began printing a recipe for the Nabisco Icebox Cake on the packaging of Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers. The dessert quickly caught on, in part because it was introduced around the time that refrigerators were becoming increasingly common in American households and a trend toward convenience foods was on the rise. The Nabisco Icebox Cake became a classic in many households and most bakers considered the Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers to be a non-negotiable component of the dessert. The uniquely subtle sweetness and slight bitterness of the cookies not only worked well in the recipe, but also tasted great as a snack right out of the box, adding to their popularity. Unfortunately for fans, Nabisco’s Famous Chocolate Wafers have recently been discontinued and are no longer available on store shelves today, despite several impassioned pleas from consumers to bring them back.
