The History of My Little Pony

My Little Pony debuted as a line of toys offered by Hasbro in 1983. The toys were based on My Pretty Pony, an earlier Hasbro line of 11-inch-tall brown-and-white ponies that could twitch their ears, wink, and swish their tails. The first My Little Pony release consisted of six pastel horse figures. Each one was made of soft vinyl and featured an expressive face, a silky mane, and a unique mark such as a star or flower. Their names were: Cotton Candy, Butterscotch, Blossom, Blue Belle, Minty, and Snuzzle. More varieties soon followed, including Pegasus Ponies, Unicorns, and Sea Ponies. Hasbro also began offering stables, houses, carriages, and castles to make playing with the figures more fun and imaginative. A movie, several cartoon TV shows, and many books bolstered interest in the brand. My Little Pony reached a fever-pitch of popularity between 1983 and 1992, but has since been relaunched in the United States and remains a beloved brand with a variety of toys and media to enjoy today.
