In 1999, Monica Nassif was walking through a store when she noticed the cleaning products on display, all of which featured garish packaging and strong chemical smells. In response, she decided to create a line of cleaning products with pleasant scents and less toxic ingredients. That same year, she formed a company called Caldrea and planned to offer American consumers a line of European-style cleaning products that lacked toxic chemicals and smelled nice. She presented the idea to her mother, Thelma A. Meyer, a Midwestern homemaker, mother of nine, and avid gardener. Thelma suggested that Monica offer a more affordable range of products. Soon after, Thelma launched Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day, which she named after her mother. The products all featured attractive packaging, pleasant smells, and ingredients that were less toxic and more earth-friendly than conventional cleaners. Since then, the company has been acquired by SC Johnson, and today, Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day is known for offering a wide range of cleaning products in several nature-inspired scents as well as a popular line of scented candles.
