The History of Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

In 1913, a young Chicago chemist named Thomas Williams created the first American-made mascara for his sister, Mabel, using carbon dust and Vaseline. In 1915, he founded Maybelline (fittingly, he chose the name because it was a combination of "Mabel" and "Vaseline"). Two years later, he introduced Maybelline Cake Mascara, the first modern eye cosmetic meant for everyday use. While it was originally only available via mail order, it became so popular that it was soon added to drugstore shelves. In the early 1960s, Maybelline launched Ultra Lash. Notably, it was the first mascara packaged with the applicator and product housed in a single, convenient tube. Then in 1971, Maybelline New York Great Lash was introduced. It offered a revolutionary new formula, featured an iconic pink and green tube, and quickly became a bestseller. It was especially popular in the 1980s and 1990s, often serving as the first makeup product for young buyers. Today, Maybelline Great Lash Mascara remains immensely popular and is now considered one of the most beloved makeup products of all time.
