Little Debbie Cosmic Brownies debuted in 1999 and were inspired by a popular '90s trend — cosmic bowling. In the last decade of the 20th century, bowling alleys across the country began using lasers, fog, disco balls, and neon lighting to make bowling more exciting. The Little Debbie team was inspired by this trend and included colorful chocolate pieces on top of a frosted brownie, creating Cosmic Brownies. As soon as the snack cakes hit grocery store shelves in 1999, they caught on all over the country and remain widely popular today (they are even ranked as the most popular Little Debbie treat in 4 states). In 2021, Kellogg's and Little Debbie even collaborated to create Cosmic Brownies Cereal, although it has since been discontinued. Today, Little Debbie Cosmic Brownies remain a beloved treat for many Americans and are readily available at most grocery stores.
