The History of Leaf Blowers

While no one seems to know for sure who invented the leaf blower, Dom Quinto is often credited with creating it. Interestingly, the leaf blower was originally invented as an agricultural sprayer, but manufacturers quickly realized that it had potential as a lawn maintenance tool. However, while they are widespread today, leaf blowers have long been controversial. Emissions from traditionally gas-powered leaf blowers pose environmental concerns. Because the tools can release airborne particulates and carbon monoxide into the surrounding area, they are governed by the U.S. E.P.A.’s emission standards for small engines. Gas-powered models are also notoriously loud, and many communities have enacted strict laws to keep the decibels down, with some even banning the tools entirely. Newer electric models are quieter than traditional gas-powered options, but are often expensive and do still create a certain level of noise and dust. While many people despise leaf blowers for the noise and environmental concerns they create, the tools are still widely used in the U.S. today for lawn maintenance because of the convenience they provide.
