The History of IKEA's STRANDMON Wing Chair

STRANDMON’s direct predecessor was the MK wing chair, which IKEA launched in 1951. The chair was one of the very first pieces of upholstered furniture offered by the chain. It was created by IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad in collaboration with the Qvarnström furniture factory in Liatorp, where it was designed and manufactured. For several years, the MK was one of the most popular products at the local furniture fair and was embraced as a reading chair in Swedish homes. Over the years, the wing chair became a timeless classic. So in 2012, IKEA launched an updated wing chair, STRANDMON. The furniture juggernaut reportedly put the chair through multiple quality tests before releasing it, including, according to Ulf Engström, a product developer at IKEA, a test to ensure that a person could sit down on it and get up again at least 50,000 times! STRANDMON quickly became a modern classic and is still available in several colors today.
