The History of IKEA's STOCKHOLM Rug

The IKEA STOCKHOLM rug debuted in 2006 as part of the furniture retailer’s fourth "STOCKHOLM" collection. Designer Anna Sörensson laid the groundwork with her handmade textiles, which she later had made by Ljungbergs textile printers when printing them in her home studio became impractical. She was known for working with basic shapes like stripes, squares, and circles. Anna Sörensson created the STOCKHOLM rug alongside designer Maria Åström. Made from 100% wool, the design featured an asymmetric black and white pattern that is now considered iconic. Due to its unique appearance and flat-weave design, the rug quickly became popular for high-traffic areas of the home like the living room and dining room. It was added to the official IKEA catalog in 2008; sadly, Sörensson passed away that same year at a relatively young age. Today, IKEA still carries Sörensson’s STOCKHOLM rug and it is often considered a modern classic by professional designers and has many fans all over the world.
