The History of Ice Cream Cakes

Ice cream cakes are a classic birthday treat. But do you know how this delicious dessert came to be? Ice cream cake is thought to date back to the 1700s in England. However, these early forms of ice cream cake were expensive. Since the modern freezer hadn’t been invented yet, only wealthy lords and ladies were able to afford the high cost of ice cream cake. While the treat did become more popular during the Victorian Era, it wasn’t available to everyone until after World War I, when refrigerators, freezers, and household appliances became more widely obtainable. In the 1930s, ice cream shops and other vendors began making ice cream cakes; the dessert has been a fixture at birthday parties and other family celebrations ever since!
