The first modern flour sifter was invented by Jacob Bromwell in 1819. It consisted of a large metal can (typically made of lightweight tin or copper) and a hand-cranked fan of blades with a sieve at the bottom. Many models also included a scooped tip for easy dipping. Flour sifters first became popular during the Victorian Era as inexpensive but effective tools for aerating flour. While they’re no longer as popular, these baking tools actually still exist. Interestingly, modern models don’t differ greatly from Bromwell’s original design! While many people use mesh strainers and other tools to sift flour now, plenty of serious bakers still prefer to use hand-cranked flour sifters today.
