The History of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream was invented by none other than Ben & Jerry’s. In 1984, an anonymous fan suggested mixing globs of cookie dough into the company’s existing vanilla-flavored ice cream. After finding out about the suggestion, which was left at the company’s first shop in Burlington, Vermont, the Ben & Jerry’s team got to work making the flavor a reality. It quickly became so popular that the team brought it to the frozen aisle of the grocery store in 1991. It was introduced to the UK in 1994 and made its way to other parts of the world from there. Of course, other brands noticed the flavor’s success and began making their own versions of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream. In 2019, Ben & Jerry’s even began offering a vegan version of the fan-favorite flavor. Today, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough remains one of the most popular ice cream flavors in the U.S. and Ben & Jerry’s alone sells over 1.6 million pints of it each year.
