This staple of American kitchens was first invented in 1922 by Stephen Poplawski, the owner of Stevens Electric Company in Racine, Wisconsin. He originally created the blender as a way to mix up drinks like malts and milk shakes, but his invention turned out to be great at reducing fruits and vegetables to a liquid as well. Interestingly, the blender wasn’t only used in cooking or mixology – it was also a vital tool for Dr. Jonas Salk in his development of the polio vaccine!
