The History of Birthday Cake Ice Cream

Birthday Cake ice cream has become a favorite in the 21st century, but its origins are a little unclear. The flavor of “birthday cake” itself has its roots in the rise of convenience food during the postwar period in mid-20th century America, when boxed cake mix and artificial flavorings were on the rise. Then in 1989, Pillsbury launched the now-famous Funfetti cake mix, which became a staple at birthday parties in the 1990s and 2000s and was quickly embraced by kids and adults alike. Cold Stone Creamery is often credited with inventing Birthday Cake as an ice cream flavor when the chain debuted its Cake Batter ice cream in 2003. The flavor was reportedly created when a franchisee mixed dry yellow cake mix into a sweet vanilla ice cream base. It was designed to taste like a nostalgic birthday cake and quickly became one of Cold Stone’s most beloved selections. Other ice cream parlors and manufacturers followed suit, and cake-flavored ice cream quickly became popular in many parts of the United States. Today, Birthday Cake ice cream remains a fan favorite with beloved chains like Baskin-Robbins and popular grocery store brands like Turkey Hill and Favorite Day all offering a version of the flavor, many complete with rainbow sprinkles and other festive mix-ins.
