The History of Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby Ice Cream

Chubby Hubby ice cream is one of Ben & Jerry’s most popular flavors, but it has a particularly wacky origin story — the flavor got its start as a prank! Two office workers wanted to play a joke on their coworker, who was obsessed with Ben & Jerry’s. So, they told their coworker that there was a new flavor out called Chubby Hubby. Of course, the flavor didn’t exist, so their coworker was unable to find it. The two pranksters later felt bad and whipped up a batch of the made-up ice cream flavor, which featured pretzels, peanut butter, and fudge, then presented it to their coworker as a gift. They also wrote a letter to Ben & Jerry’s telling the ice cream makers about their prank and detailing their made-up flavor, Chubby Hubby. Ben & Jerry’s liked the fake flavor so much that they decided to actually develop the ice cream! Chubby Hubby became a favorite upon its debut in the 1990s and remains a beloved classic today.
