The History of Batteries

The battery was invented by Italian physicist Alessandro Volta in 1800. Before power wires became common around 1900, batteries were the only source of stored electricity. The first batteries lasted less than an hour, but improvements over time made them more practical. The most recent development was made in 1985 when the lithium-ion battery that powers our cell phones and digital cameras today was invented!
